PDFiconBGFMA Design Data for Steel Grid Decks

Prefabricated grid reinforced concrete and Exodermic® bridge decks help accelerate bridge construction using either cast-in-place or precast installation. These grid deck systems are also very lightweight and durable, often times weighing 30-50% less than conventional concrete decks and still providing increased life-cycle cost performance when considering they last 2-3 times as long as rebar decks. Open steel grid flooring is the lightest deck system available and is optimal for movable bridges or truss structures where weight savings is a key requirement.

Click on the grid deck type below to view tables that provide section properties, span capacities, deck weights, and more information for the various common configurations of each deck system.

Partial Depth Grid

Half Filled Grid Decks or welded steel grid decks partially filled with concrete are lighter in weight than full depth concrete filled grids yet offer similar span capacities.

Full Depth Grid

Fully Filled Grid Decks or welded steel grid decks with full depth concrete infill are the oldest grid reinforced concrete decks on the market. This system can be designed to span up to approximately 10 feet.

Exo Grid

Exodermic® Decks or unfilled steel grid decks composite with a reinforced concrete slab are the most structurally efficient grid deck systems available, and offer increased span capacities and a slight weight advantage over half filled grid decks. Common configurations shown in the design table can span up to about 15 feet, but other WT main bar sizes can be used to achieve longer spans.

Open Grid

Open Grid Decks are welded steel grids with no concrete infill and are the lightest deck system available, however span lengths are limited. Open grid decks can be provided in a rectangular or diagonal configuration depending on the users preference.
