Q:
Do contractors need special skilled laborers to install panels?

A:
The laborers required would be no different than would be required to construct a conventional full-depth concrete deck. However, if the precast option is employed, the precaster and contractor must exercise special care when handling panels to limit concrete tensile stresses and avoid twisting of panels. A rigid lifting frame, which accounts for settlement/deflection at the lifting points, should be designed and used to move panels.

Bare grids must also be treated with care by lifting from four points minimum near the corners or at interior points to minimize bending stresses.
